When it comes to the 2018 Nissan Maxima, premium fuel is suggested, but it is not required. The manual recommends using premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index). When You use a lower grade of fuel than whats recommended or required, a modern vehicles ECU (Electronic Control Unit) can account for different octane levels and adjust accordingly. Theres a good chance Your horsepower and MPG will go down while CO2 emissions go up. How You drive can significantly affect Your fuel economy. The harder You accelerate, the more fuel You use. Unnecessary braking wastes the fuel You used to get up to speed.

Recommended is the key word. Required would mean the engine could suffer damage. Recommended means the engine has ping sensors and can adjust itself to handle lower octane fuels. You may get lower performance and gas mileage. Engine control systems are marvelous creations. :)

All of the 2018 Nissan Maxima's have the same drivetrain, the same type of transmission and the same engine size of 3.5 liters. The Maxima S, the Maxima SV, the Maxima SL, The Maxima SR and the Maxima Platinum are similar in that they are all recommended to take premium unleaded gasoline only. So they cannot use regular gas.

You can use 89 octane/regular gas. As long as your knock sensors are working the computer will just r****d ignition timing, this will result in some power loss, but not really noticeable if you are driving normally. Don't use reg IF your engine light is on.
