The Ford transit custom uses a timing chain to synC-HRonize the position of the crankshaft and camshaft. The chain is cheaper over the life of the vehicle because it rarely needs servicing. This does not however mean there is never an issue. Most of the time the problems with the timing chain is because the tensioners loosen and can cause the chain to skip a gear which will throw the timing out of whack. When the timing is correct, the engine will run smoothly as it should. If the timing is off just by a few degrees, it will start missing the acceleration will be slowed and it is bad enough could destroy the engine. This happens because the valve timing is off with the piston timing and the valve could open as the piston is coming up and will wreck the inside of the engine.

Actually it depends on the Engine type. If it is a 2.0l with AdBlue then it does not use a timing chain, instead uses a wet timing belt. The 2.2TDCIis indeed a chain.

Transits before mid 2016 have the 2.2 which has timing chain but laye2016 onward the with have the 2.0 euro 6 ecoblue engine which has a wet belt, prone to snapping at ow milage due to oil deterioration and also head gaskets causing exhaust gas to pop back through the intake.the 2.0 is smoother when it is running but more prone to engine problems
