The Subaru XV has a timing chain, in fact, it has two of them, one going to each of the overhead cams. One of the most common issues with the chain comes from the hydraulic tensioners which have a tendency to leak. When this happens, the chain gets slightly slacked and will briefly rattle when the engine is firSTStarted. Over time the tensioning guides will wear out and could damage or destroy the engine if the chain gets derailed. You would need to basically disassemble the entire front of the car just to get to them. Other than the tensioner issue, the chain does not need regular maintenance. It is sealed inside the engine and receives constant lubrication from the engine oil.

The 2018 Subaru xv has a timing chain instead of a timing belt.
