Changing the rear differential fluid in a 2015 Toyota Highlander is a simple job requiring a 10-millimeter Allen head socket, ratchet some, drain pan, gear oil and some crush washers. You will locate the service side of the differential by looking under the vehicle just in front of the rear passenger tire. There is a row of hex head bolts along the outer edge of the differential, and two Allen head bolts. The bottom Allen head bolt is the drain plug and the one at about the 9 oclock position is the fill plug. Place the drain pan under the drain plug and remove the plug. Remove the fill plug too to help the thick oil drain faster. Replace the crush washers on both plugs and re-install the drain plug once the fluid has been drained. Fill using Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent just until the oil begins to come out the hole, which will be about a half of a quart. Dont forget to replace the fill plug.

To change the differential fluid you should park on a flat, level surface. Remove the filler and drain plugs and then fill it within 5mm of the bottom of the plug opening.
