The process to change Your 2003 Ford Explorer's rear differential fluid is quite simple; all You'll need is a 1/2 inch drive ratchet, a 3/4 inch drive ratchet, and replacement 75W-140 differential fluid. Perhaps, of course, a little bit of patience -- things like this always seem to go wrong, at least for me! I tend to plan out an afternoon and maybe have a few beverages in the meantime. Anyway, You'll need to put Your Explorer up on jack stands and access the rear differential cover. On top, there's a fill plug that can be removed with the 1/2" drive, and a drain plug at the bottom that can be removed with the 3/4" drive. Remove these to drain, replace the drain plug, fill, replace the fill plug, and You're as good as new!

You begin by finding the fill plug at the top of the diff to change the rear differential fluid. Cover (1/2 "drive ratchet) and the drain plug (3/4" drive ratchet) is at the rim. Then you'll take the fill plug out, take the drain plug out, allow it to drain and refill the fresh fluid.
