The base models of the Ford Escape will not have a way to open the fuel door from inside the vehicle. You will need to exit the vehicle and head over to the passenger side and open it by hand. Now that You have it open all You will need to do is stick the gas nozzle in to the slot. The gas cap does not come off on this vehicle and instead it just has a door that folds back in order to insert gas in to the vehicle.

To open a ford escape gas tank, use the fuel tank release lever inside the vehicle to open the gas tank. If there is no interior release lever, find the gas tank door at the side back of the vehicle. Push in the gas tank door to pop it open. Or, the gas tank door may simply be notched, so all you need to do is pull the door open.

There is no release or door pop, the gas tank is just to open it by pulling the side.

This is just a typical example of cost-reduction brainstorming at Ford. I can see this going bad after the warranty goes out.
