The airbag system in the 2009 Chevy Impala is a self healing system, which means that once the issue has been repaired the light will reset itself. There are many sensors throughout the vehicle which work in conjunction with the airbag system. There's side impact sensors, front impact sensors, rear impact sensors and there's a passenger occupancy sensor in the seat. If the system detects an issue with one or more of these sensors it will cause the light to come on in the dash. The most common problem with the sensors is usually a loose or damaged wire or the connector is corroded. A diagnostic scan tool would be able to determine which sensor is having the issue, once repaired the light will go out.

To reset the airbag light sensor in a 2009 Chevy impala with this connection made, turn the ignition key to the "on" position (do not start the engine). The srs will illuminate for two seconds, then turn off. When the light turns off, disconnect the shorting wire to un-short the circuit. The srs light will turn on again. Note that resetting the airbag sensor is not recommended and can result in injury.
