If Your Chevrolet Silverado has a mechanical speedometer, You'll first need to open the truck's hood and locate the transmission. Remove the speedometer cable from the tail shaft and the bolt holding the gear housing cover. Remove the plate, and count the number of teeth on the drive gear. Next, measure from the top of the Silverado's wheels to the center. Multiply by two. Divide 20,168 by the tire's diameter to get revolutions per mile. Multiple revolutions per mile by the teeth number You arrived at above. Multiple this again by the Silverado's axle ratio, which You can typically find in the vehicle's documentation. Divide this by 1,001. Contact GM and get the necessary gear for Your Silverado; these can sometimes be purchased aftermarket, but You'll need to ensure it's made specifically for the Silverado in Your model year. Install the new drive gear, and You'll be recalibrated.

To recalibrate a speedometer, the distance of the test drive required to recalibrate the speedometer is calculated. Tap on the speedometer and hold the ignition button, start the vehicle and release the button. Press the button again, and push the speedometer manufacturer's specified size. After you have driven the specified distance, press the button a third time.
