Removing the transfer case from a 2005 Toyota Highlander is a difficult job, recommended only for professional mechanics or those with significant confidence in their automotive repair skills. There's plenty that can go wrong, so amateurs will often find themselves causing more issues with the attempt. To do so, You'll need to raise Your Highlander significantly; 10 inch Ramps are recommended. You'll need to drop the cradle and remove the engine/transmission assembly. You'll also need to remove the CV axles out of the transfer case, so that alone creates issues. If You're dead set on completing the job Yourself, a search of YouTube can net You a few tutorials; however, I'd strongly recommend spending the few extra dollars and having it done professionally.
