Resetting the engine control module (ECM), also known as an ECU, in a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is as simple as disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a long enough period of time. There's no complicated reset procedure; You just need to cut off power for a long enough time where the ECM forces a reset when it regains power once more. Internal capacitors will hold a bit of a charge for a period of time after the negative terminal is disconnected, so it's recommended that You turn Your headlight switch to ON and let the truck sit for 10 to 15 minutes before reconnecting. Some technicians say that touching the positive and negative battery cables together (WHILE DISCONNECTED!) can help expedite the process, but others disagree, saying this wouldn't do anything to help. If You're patient, You can just wait out the 15 minutes.

How to reset the ecu on a chevy truck first remove the nut from the negative battery cable using a socket set or wrench. Slide the cable off of the battery and set it aside. Turn the headlight switch to the on position to drain the ecu of any remaining power. Wait at least 10 minutes, then turn it back to the off position. Replace the negative battery cable by reversing the previous steps.
