Limp mode is actually a safety measure that prevents the car from being driven if the computer detects a fault in the transmission. You'll notice greatly reduced engine speed and the "check engine light" illuminated. To get out of limp mode find a safe location and pull over to the side of the road. Place the vehicle into park. Cycle the key in the ignition to the "on" and "off" positions three times without starting and then start the Jeep Cherokee and the system may be reset. You can also try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. If You are unable to get out of limp mode, check the Liberty's transmission fluid levels and the spark plugs. A technician will need to scan Your vehicle with an OBDII to clear the error codes and disable limp mode.

To reset the Jeep Liberty limp mode, you'll bring your car to a full stop. Move your automatic transmission to PARK. Change the key on the ignition to OFF. Wait for 10 seconds. Switch the engine back on. Choose the gear of your preference and drive away.

You gotta unhook the battery for about thirty minutes to let the computer reset...well it usually doesn't take any longer than thirty minutes anyway...
