AWD is considered a premium addition to an SUV model and offers more stability by providing all four wheels with equal power. The Chevy EquinoxBenefits from AWD technology but only as an option for the LT, LS and Premier trims. It can be engaged by pressing the "AWD" button located on the center gear shift console. The Equinox is considered a FWD vehicle, but drivers are able to switch on the "all wheel drive" when road conditions worsen or become hazardous. It's considered a "part-time" system because it's not continuously operating. In other SUVs the "all wheel drive" function is usually never off and does require driver input to engage. You will experience a slight decrease in fuel economy when using it because the wheels require more engine power to function.

The sales guy who sold me my 2018 Equinox in AWD told me it can only be switched into AWD mode while the vehicle is stopped or stationary. The owners manual doesn’t address this issue at all.

When you are highway driving you do not need AWD, and should have it off. The difference in gas mileage is substantial.
