The 2005 Toyota Highlander is based on a front-wheel drive vehicle, but has what's known as "full time 4-wheel drive". In essence, this means that the vehicle is constantly monitoring factors such as traction, wheel spin, and exterior conditions -- when a situation arises where four wheel drive is necessary, it will transfer power to Your front or rear brakes. Under normal circumstances, it's a full-time 50/50 split system. What that means is that under normal operation of the Highlander, You'll receive an equal amount of power to each wheel. Since it's only transferred in the case of adverse conditions, You can typically expect a smooth ride, with a bit of an emergency drive wheel failsafe when things begin to go south.
