The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado comes in a number of different configurations, and across those, different engines are used. You may have either the 2.5L 4Cylinder, the 2.8L 4Cylinder turbodiesel, or the 3.6L V6. The 2.5L useS5.0 quarts of SAE 0W-20 full synthetic motor oil, though You can substitute SAE 5W-20 over the short term. The turbodiesel variant requireS6.0 quarts of SAE 0W-40 or SAE 5W-30 full synthetic. Finally, the largest 3.6L requireS6.0 quarts of SAE 0W-30, but You may substitute SAE 5W-30 over the short term. The substitutions aren't recommended, because thicker oil introduces more friction into the engine. Over time, this can cause premature engine wear, which will eventually lead Your engine to fail sooner than it otherwise would.

The V6 Colorado requires synthetic 5W-30 oil to avoid premature wear on the engine. The L4 diesel needs dexos 2 5W-30 and the regular L4 needs 5W-20. 6 quarts of oil are required to fill the V6 and the L4 diesel to the correct level. The L4 needs only 5 quarts. The correct amount and kind of oil is essential to maintain a working engine. Too much or too little oil can lead to catastrophic engine problems. The wrong oil can lead to the same.
