To release the rear headrests of the Chevy Equinox, pull up on the assembly until it is extended to its maximum height. Locate two plastic covers at the base and on either side of the part's metal poles. The inside edge of the plastic cover is equipped with a small entry point the size of a pinhole. This opening can be found on both sides of the headrest at the end of the metal poles it is affixed to. Using the end of a bent paper clip or other small tool, insert into the hole and press. The metal pole will be released. Repeat this step for the other side of the seat and pull upwards to remove the headrest completely.

The comment say holes the size of a pin. I just did it for my son's seat. It's a pain to do but it work.
