Putting the 2008 Grand Cherokee in 4wd requires You to hit the 4wd button located on the console dashboard. It can be found near the base of the gear shift in some models as well. Simply pushing this button again should swap the vehicle out of 4wd as well. The 4wd system allows the Grand Cherokee to split and provide torque to all of its tires equally. As a result, this allows the car to perform very well on atypical terrain, such as mountains, mud, hills etc. They work similarly to All-wheel drive (AWD) systems as well, but generally, are able to provide more torque and drive to their tires.
