If the battery goes dead in Your Ford Escape, You take the key fob and place it on the right side of the steering column. There is a picture of a key and hold it there. You will need to press the brake and push the engine start button as usual. The car will start normally. As the battery wears out, however, the range and signal strength of the fob transmitter will be reduced. If You notice that Your key remote does not unlock Your car, lock Your car, or start the engine for those with the automatic start button as early as it should, it's probably time to replace the battery.

The only one that worked was placing the key fob in the cubby tray under the AC controls in the center console

You’ll have to try placing the key fob in a few different positions. Mine works with the white side up/the top of fob. Buttons facing towards me. Needs to be touching the antenna icon. It should be touching the antenna icon on steering column.
