The first defense of preventing rust on Your Ram 1500's fenders is to consider getting the dealer-offered rust-proofing when You purchase Your vehicle. There's not a consensus on just how helpful this is, and many people think that the truck's already got rust protection from the manufacturer, but if You've got $500 to $1k eating a hole in Your pocket, You can opt for this route. If You're old school cheap, though, You can actually just do this pretty inexpensively. One of the common methods is using WD-40. Yup, that WD-40... I bet You've got a can sitting next to You right now (Or is that just me Am I weird for always having a can within arm's reach) and You can apply it directly to the fenders for protection up to a year. Something else that works, surprisingly, is linseed oil. It's even organic, for folks who that's important to! Cost here generally runs about $6 peR8.75 oz can. Preventive measures beyond spraying also include avoiding salted roads and washing Your Ram often.

You need to clean and dry them, and you should apply a winter guard coating to keep the moisture out. Keeping the truck in a garage will also help a lot.
