The Ford Explorer's built froM2002-2005 often experience an issue with their dome lights remaining on after the driver has closed the door. In SUVs equipped with a manual "off" button, this can be remedied by switching the "off" lever located to the left of the steering wheel in the driver's dash. Check the rear hatch has been closed. A dome light will remain on if any one of the Ford Explorer's passenger, driver's or rear doors are open. Sensors in the hatch's latch will detect if it is not fully closed. A warning light in the instrument panel will indicate an open door. If these approaches fail, examine the driver's door for a failed switch. It often needs replaced to restore sensor function.

The rear dome light remains on while driving and there are no indications that Doors are open. How do you turn this rear hatch area dome light off?

To turn your dome light off in a ford explorer, depress the the switch located on your steering wheel, or wait for them to turn off automatically after the car door shuts.

Look to the left of steering wheel. Rotary dial with push buttons around it. Lower left hand push button is for dome lights. Push it for off/on. Would post pic but this forum does not support that.

In my 2016 Ford Explorer, there is an oblong button to the left of the steering wheel that controls the brightness of both displays and also turns on and off the dome lights over the back seat and at the rear hatch door. The lights over the back seat can also be turned on and off by pushing on one side of the light itself--there is no on/off switch for the ones in my vehicle. If the lights have not been manually turned on, they will go off after a few seconds once you exit the vehicle and lock the doors with the remote. If they don't, push the one(s) that are still on one time and try locking the car again.
