Resetting the anti-theft on the Ford Escape can be a bit of a pain. To start You will want to open the hood of the car and secure it with the bar. Now locate the battery and remove the positive cable from the battery. With it still, off go to the car and turn the key in the ignition to the on position. Wait for about 10 min. Now get out and reattach the battery cable. Go back into the car and turn it to the off position. You should now have set the anti theft. If You have not then You did not wait long enough with the battery cable off.

On a ford escape remove positive cable from battery, place key in car and turn to the on position, then replace positive cable, turn key off then back on to reset anti theft system.

Not an answer but a question...I lost my 2002 ford escape keys and can't find them no where.can I disengage the anti theft on my car and just replace the ignition cylinder? Or how do I reprogram a ford key that fits my vehicle but not the antitheft. So it can workfor the antitheft.

@TheresaDDriver You will need a OBDII reader capable of IMMO(immobilizer) bidirectional control essentially. The ignition cylinder being replaced wouldn't help since the car is reading an issue with the key more than likely. My 09 escape needs the PATS reprogrammed and new key made which will run anywhere from 120-180 or you can get a $400+ device if you wanna do it yourself. If you wait til the anti theft light stops blinking(while key is turned to the run position), after a minute or so it will stop its rapid blinking and then will blink a pattern that will equate to a code. That code is the reason the passive antitheft system(PATS) was activated. For instance, after that minute of rapid blinking I get a 1 blink, a pause, and then 4 slow blinks, which is a fault code 1-4(14). Fault code 14: PATS only receiving a partial code from the key. I'll drop the fault code list and fixes below since it took me an eternity to find online and it's not in the owner manual. This is Dashlab on PATS SECURITY FLASH CODES 1 then 1 (11) - Transponder Antenna (ignition coil) has no power. Remedy - Fuse or replace faulty Antenna 1 then 2 (12) - Antenna Fault Remedy - replace faulty Antenna 1 then 3 (13) - Key in ignition is not a PATS key Remedy - replace with correct key 1 then 4 (14) - Partial code from key received Remedy - Check transponder for damage (usually seen with Glass transponders) 1 then 5 (15) - Invalid key code Remedy - Use programmed key or program key 1 then 6 (16) - CAN Communications error Remedy - Usually this is a blown PCM fuse but can be caused by faulty wiring / control module 2 then 1 (21) - Not enough keys stored in memory Remedy - Program additional keys. Most Ford from 2001 are 2 key system so must have a minimum of 2 keys programmed. Earlier systems must have 3 keys programmed. 2 then 2 (22) - Initialisation / Configuration missing Remedy - This code is rare but when seen it usually requires a faulty module replacing as if it was misconfiguration code would be 23 2 then 3 (23) - PCM & PATS modules do not agree Remedy - This is very common on the earlier Diesel systems especially Transit. Realignment of the modules is required with Ford IDS or capable tool.

I keep having problems with my 03 Escape XLT. Only thing that works for me is to disconnect and "remove" battery for at least an hour. Connect the pos and neg cables together, I use a short lenth of speaker wire. Drains the system of any residual electricity and resets the (insert expletive) of a p.a.t system. Is really annoying. At least its been a mild winter in manitoba so far.

Connect battery and when the alarm horn sounds then insert the key in driver door and unlock it. Alarm stops.
