Most modern model years of the Ford Escape are fitted with "Intelligent 4WD", which essentially means that Your vehicle will sense when You need to go into 4WD, judged by whether Your front are rear tires begin to lose traction while in in two wheel drive. Ford markets this as a way to effectively combat conditions caused by mud, ruts, sand, snow, gravel, grass, and hill descent. Personally, I prefer the ability to turn my AWD / 4WD on and off at my own leisure, but different strokes for different folks I suppose. The Ford system introduces new sensors into the mix that increase the likely number of things that can break, but it can take a lot of the human error calculation out of getting "unstuck".

The ford escape uses an intelligent four wheel drive system that will automatically activate when needed.
