The Ford Escape does not have a manual all-wheel drive. The system will always be in front-wheel-drive unless it needs to shift. This is handled by the traction control system. If the system detects that the car is slipping then it will shift into all wheel drive. If the system does not detect strain in the traction system then it will shift back. It measures the traction by sudden changes in the speed at which the tires are spinning. If they speed up and then slow in a jerky uneven fashion then it will be able to tell that it is slipping. Some systems will also have a weight sensor, so it will be able to tell if the wheels come up off of the ground.

The ford escape does not have to turn on all wheel drive. It stays in front wheel drive unless the vehicle starts losing traction or sliding then the awd is activated by itself.

Calvert how old is the car and what shop is doing the work? If proper troubleshooting and diagnostics are used should only take one or two trips and no where near 12k to repair
