If Your Ford Escape battery dies while the car is locked, You can unlock it by using the regular key to open the door. Simply insert Your standard metal key into the driver's side door lock and open it. This requires a counter-clockwise turn of the key. As the car's battery is dead, the central locking system will not work. This means only the driver's side door will open when You use the key in this manner. You will have to open the other doors from the inside. If You have jumper cables, this might be Your fastest option to get back on the road, at least for the time being. So it is always a good idea to have one of those lying in Your trunk at all times.

Key doesn't unlock. WTF! What a BS system. Can't open the car to get the hood unlatched, so can't jump it, so stranded. Thanks Ford!

I turn the key left and it doesn’t unlock. It acts like it needs battery power to unlock. Nothing I try unlocks the door. I slip a slim Jim down inside the window and can hit something that pushes the handle out like it is opening the door but the door remains locked.

To unlock a ford escape with a dead battery, use the door lock key. Insert the key into the driver's side door and turn until the door unlocks.

I have the same issue, took it to a locksmith.he took the door apart, cannot get key to unlock door. Inside therenis no mechanism, only a circuit board. He has no idea how ro fix it. Th e ford dealership said the key must not be for that car, but it turns the lock ( and the ignition) and it will not unlock even though it turns both ways.

Use the regular key to unlock the door, by turning it counterclockwise. Other doors need to be opened manually from the inside.

I have a 2013 Ford Escape Titanium. After about 2 months of leaving it parked, the battery was dead. There'sa manual/metal door key on the back of the key fob, above the cover where the battery is replaced. I almost didn't realize it was a hidden key compartment. The only place to use the metal key is on the driver's door. I tried turning the key counter clockwise as mentioned in the other previous replies on here, and the door wouldn't open despite it turning freely in that direction. When I turned the key clockwise, I met some resistance, however when I gently held the key in place in the clockwise condition, I was able to open the door. So basically, when you turn the key clockwise, some resistance is normal.

I had that issue, on my Escape, even if you can get the door handle with wire, it will not open door, finally, I used a long thick wire, bought an inflatable shim air bag for $18 at Home Depot, inserted between door from top of door, and reached the hood release, took about 20 minutes but was able to pop the hood, and then jump the battery for a minute, and then I could use the metal key or press unlock from key fob.

I had this issue this week (May 2023). A locksmith friend told me to spray the lock with PB Blaster or WD-40, and run the key in and out a dozen times or so, then try to turn counter clockwise.THIS WORKED! He said most likely there was a d***y jammed tumbler keeping it from working.

A month of not starting it and my 2012 Escape battery was dead. Key fob did not work, neither did the key. Oh sh--! Then I read Brent's answer from above and it eventually worked. People, GIVE THE WD-40 A GOOD CHANCE TO WORK MAYBE 30 MINUTES !! - Squirt it way into the key hole and on the key and wiggle the c**p out of it. Finally I was wiggling turning key right and left and pulling on the door handle too and -- Miracles Happen -- it opened... I copied Brent's original tip below. THANK YOU Brent for taking the time to tell us (me!) about this solution - as most of us all only use the key fob and I can easily see after a couple of year how the manual lock tumblers might get stuck. -- Martin Brent's answer from above: I had this issue this week (May 2023). My 2015 escape battery is dead, so dead the combo won’t work snd the key won’t turn on the driver side door. I know I used my key before (I think) so I’m locked out w/ a dead battery.
