There are variety of reasons it could cause the ABS light to come on in a Toyota RAV4. It can range from the wheel speed sensors have detected a skid or locked wheel. The speed sensor may have lost communication with the ABS module or is bad. The module controls the ABS system, if it fails the ABS light will come on. The most common reason why the module fails is due to corrosion but could also be because of damaged wiring. If the level of the brake fluid is too low, the light will come on as well. If the fluid level gets too low there wont enough pressure in the lines and the ABS wont be able to function.

An illuminated abs light is a general notification that there is something amiss with your braking system. This can result from an out of normal reading from a wheel speed sensor or the abs module itself. Generally, the only thing the average owner can do beyond taking the vehicle to a mechanic is to ensure the abs fluid level is correct.
