The Ford Explorer is listed as a mid-size SUV and has been classified as such since it was created. The SUV or sport utility vehicle is a truck base with raised ground clearance and usually four doors. Over the years the vehicle has changed sizes throughout the new models that were released. It started with a smaller body and then was increased to keep up with the larger more comfortable SUVs in itS-Class. For the vehicle to bE-Classified as a mid-size SUV it needs to have a volume for the interior to be 120 to 140 cubic feet by the EPA. If it is over that classification it will be full size and if it is smaller than that it will be a compact crossover.

There is no commonly agreed definition of what "full size" means, but the explorer is generally considered a "mid size" suv compared to the larger expedition.
