The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV that uses body-on-frame construction, like a pickup truck but does not share the same platform as Tacoma. The frame comes instead from the Land Cruiser Prado, which is not sold in the North American market. Body-on-frame is an automobile construction method where a separate body is mounted on a relatively rigid vehicle frame or chassis carrying the powertrain (the engine and drivetrain). While this was the original method of building automobiles, body-on-frame construction is now used mainly for pickup trucks and (mostly full size) SUVs. There are some advantages to this frame. It is easier to repair after accidents. Body damage is less structurally critical; meaning panels can often be replaced more easily and the vehicle returned to a "roadworthy" status more quickly.
