2020 Toyota 4Runner Review: Ultra Reliable Old-School SUV With Low Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Mar 7, 2023

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner lasts over 300,000 miles with relatively minor battery drain and paint issues reported. At $31,998 to $58,998, it’s expensive, but worth it for one of the most dependable SUVs on the market.

Off-road capabilities are outstanding, the cargo area has a great slide-out floor available and the stereo system has the latest technology.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is choppier than other midsize SUVs, it’s not fuel efficient and the tall ride height can make it difficult to climb into.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 9/10 – 2020 is a great year for the Toyota 4Runner since it’s extremely reliable, even if it’s outdated in some areas. Owner reviews praise the four-wheel drive system, low ownership costs, along with the comfortable cabin.

All black everything - Toyota 4runner, venture.
I love the Toyota 4runner, venture model. My vehicle is all black (paint, rims, and interior seats) with red trim. It has a rack on top and the option for a towing hook on the back. I like the rugged look that the lifted hood gives it. Some people may find that it is louder when you drive faster (I.E. On the highway) because of the rack on top, but it is something that I have gotten used to. I think the gas usage is fairly good for an SUV. You have to keep in mind the height of the vehicle for when parking in parking garages or decks, but the rack is removable, so you can always remove it, if you want to. Overall, it is my favorite car, to date! I love it!

4runner really does run 4us.
We purchased our 4runner amid moving a few states away and it didn’t disappoint on the road trips as far as performance, reliability and comfort. We have other vehicles yet continue preferring to drive it around our new hilly hometown in middle TN. The large dashboard knobs are easy to grab and turn. The screen offers many conveniences, including displaying easy navigation comparable to GPS for dummies. We like the spacious backseat and beyond for our dogs, groceries, landscaping needs, etc. The towing capacity was a big selling point and we’ve hauled trailers of landscaping and building materials. The only negative so far is the height of the seats. Older visitors recently had some difficulty getting in and out.

The Toyota 4runner trd pro is the perfect sporty family car.
We really enjoy all the features the car has to offer such as, being 4 wheel drive, the leather seats, seat warmers. I also enjoy the sporty look of it all while still being a family car. I feel safe driving it, knowing that it is built to be strong. The interior is not as simple as most Toyota’s seem to be which is only more of a reason to like it. The red detailing in the seats really gives it a unique look.

Toyota 4runner the car made to take you everywhere.
I recently bought my toyota 4 runner it is the decision I have ever made even though I am in my early 20 I decided I wanted a car that is reliable and durable and as we all know toyota has been outstanding for that. Up to now my toyota has been running really well it does not consume to much gas and it take everywhere. Somethings I would consider toyota changing is the look and adding more features due to the price. In matter of speed it is pretty slow it takes time for it to from 0 to 40.

Affordable and dependable off-road vehicle.
I absolutely love my Toyota 4runner. The trd off road venture trim features navigation, power mirrors, heated mirrors, heated seats, honestly the list of bells and whistles goes on. The best part is the on road/off road suspension. The towing capacity is 5,000 lbs which is great.

No problems out of my Toyota 4runner. It is reliable and a great family car! I love the safety features and the space I also love that it has 4 wheel drive. It is spacious with a car seat and I love that I am also able to tow stuff since it comes with a hitch set up.

Best vehicle I have ever owned. Is so luxurious.
Suv is only a couple months old, have had no problems. Love the look, comfort and all the features it has. The backup screen is great, have never had one before. Have really utilized the voice controls a lot, makes using phone a lot safer. It is such a smooth ride, can barely hear the engine running at all. Overall, I have never had a toyota but will probably continue getting toyotas from now on.

Must pump brake pedal to get feel of brakes. Dealer say this is normal! Will trade in for different brand!

Compact SUV with 3 rows but is very sensitive to road and weather.
I love that it has smart control where it notifies me of lane switching and will slow down if there is a vehicle in front of me that is too close, I enjoy having moonroof, 3rd row seats and how compact it is comparing to sienna. It is quite higher than sienna or many other vehicles and it is the most important to me because I rely on it to go to work in er. Voice command is more sophisticated than previous vehicles, I can speak fast and immediately. It has sos button that calls 911. It opens trunk from the inside of the vehicle for curbside purchases. Do not like: not enough cup holders, cannot clip garage opener, it is very sensitive to bumps on the road and a minute move of the wheel, this is what I hate the most because we have fast highways with narrow lanes and no shoulder. In fact it is so scary, I had to find a route that is slower and has more lanes. The same with the wind, it moves quite a bit with a gust of wind. It is expensive 42k.

Nice vehicle and dependable BUT.... 5 speed transmission is extremely outdated and you get VERY poor mileage. No power tail gate, no heated stirring wheel, no blind spot monitor, no power side mirrors. Sure makes you wanna think twice about this vehicle.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota 4Runner?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Toyota 4Runner is a great off-road, old-school body-on-frame SUV with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the 4Runner at 4.2/5, praising the off-road capabilities, but doesn’t like the choppy suspension.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 4Runner a 4.6/5, enjoying the excellent resale value, but owners don’t like the out-of-date engine.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Toyota 4Runner Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Toyota 4Runner include excessive battery drain, rodents chewing on soy-based wiring, along with some chipping paint on the front bumper. Overall, these problems are relatively minor compared to other midsize SUVs from the same year.

Excessive battery drain is the most widespread complaint from 2020 4Runner owners in the first 2,000 miles. There are a lot of electrical accessories in modern vehicles which sometimes drain the battery even while it’s parked. Finding the source of the parasitic battery draw costs around $80 to diagnose, and fixing the problem can cost $10 to $100, depending on the issue.

Rodents chewing soy-based wiring is another issue reported by 2020 4Runner owners at around 5,000 miles, but it can happen at any point. The soy-based wire coatings attract rodents more than other plastic coatings. We recommend installing an ultrasonic strobe device to deter rodents since damaged wiring can cost $50 to $1,000, depending on the severity.

Chipping paint on the front bumper also shows up on some 4Runner models in the first 10,000 miles. The relatively flat bumper design on the 4Runner makes it a target for stone chips at highway speeds. The only way to fix paint chips is by repainting the affected areas for $1,000. Some people choose to install paint protection film on the bumper early on for about $500 to prevent chips.

There’s only one very minor recall on the 2020 Toyota 4Runner, which is better than other midsize SUVs. The recall is for an incorrect load carrying label, which Toyota will replace for free.

How Long Will the 2020 Toyota 4Runner Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Toyota 4Runner can last over 300,000 miles, which is much longer than other midsize SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Regular annual maintenance costs are more affordable than other SUVs as well, according to data provided by Repair Pal at $470 per year.

As a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the U joint for $275, the clutch slave cylinder which costs $200, along with the A/C pressure switch which costs around $400.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great in the 2020 Toyota 4Runner since it offers a standard 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Optional upgrades include a more powerful JBL stereo system.

Standard safety technology is also excellent offering:

  • Lane departure warning
  • Forward collision warning
  • Active traction control
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Rearview camera
  • Automatic high beams
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Pre collision system

Optional driver assistance features include front and rear parking sensors.

Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Toyota 4Runner is a good value for one of the most reliable midsize SUVs on the market. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $31,998 to $58,998, making it more than a Honda Pilot or Hyundai Palisade. When new, the price range was $36,120 to $49,865. Depreciation is much better than average, only losing around 3% of its current value per year.

What Colors Does the Toyota 4Runner Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Toyota 4Runner?

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner offers a comfortable ride, with a spacious interior and a range of features designed to enhance comfort and convenience. The seats are supportive and provide good visibility, making it easy to see the road ahead. The front seats are available with heating and ventilation, which can help keep passengers comfortable in a range of weather conditions.

The 4Runner’s suspension is designed to provide a smooth ride, even over rough terrain. The Limited and TRD Pro models feature an adaptive suspension system that adjusts to changing road conditions, providing a more comfortable ride for passengers. The TRD Pro also includes specially tuned Fox shocks that improve off-road performance while maintaining comfort on pavement. What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fifth generation of the Toyota 4Runner was launched for the 2010 model year, making it one of Toyota’s longest-running models.

2015: New TRD Pro model focused on off-road performance.

2016: Cell phone navigation added to base model, increased towing capacity.

2017: Trial and Trail Premium models renamed to TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium.

2018: No major changes.

2019: Nightshade Edition with black exterior trim added, upgraded Fox Shocks on TRD Pro.

2020: Standard Toyota Safety Sense P on all models, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto finally available.

2021: New wheels on the TRD pro model, standard LED headlights on all models.

How Does the Toyota 4Runner Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota 4Runner is one of the best midsize SUVs offered since it’s extremely reliable while also being capable of handling difficult off-road terrain and deep snow.

The Toyota Highlander is another midsize SUV from Toyota which costs around $5,000 less. Passenger room is a bit better in the Toyota Highlander, while the Toyota 4Runner is much better off-road. We recommend the Toyota 4Runner unless you need the extra room found in the Highlander, making it worth test driving both to see which you prefer.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a popular competitor, which is around $4,000 less. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while the Toyota 4Runner offers better off-road performance. We recommend the Toyota 4Runner since it has a much higher long-term reliability score than the Grand Cherokee.

I have always had a Toyota and never had any problems with the vehicles. They are reliable and very good quality. You get so much for the price of the vehicle. It's amazing, has navigation and Bluetooth and apple pay and android audio, a semi big screen to see better. Tall vehicle so it's really safe 4x4 so it can go anywhere. Really spacious so there's enough space for 5 people. Great headlights so you don't have to worry pcs so the vehicle can brake in case of emergency.

I love my 4runner! The only thing I dislike about it is the poor gas mileage. I came from a Honda which I could go a couple weeks of commuting without having to touch the gas. Now it seems I have to put gas in my truck one to two times a week. I love my truck but I am paying for it in gas.

Why I always choose the Toyota 4runner.
The 4runner has always been a very smooth ride, whether we are on the freeway, streets, or the dirt road. The back seats are very roomy and comfortable for an long trip. Have never had any issues and used to own a 2012 4runner trail edition. The new dash console they have for the music/apps and such is easy to use. I think the most important thing when buying a car should be the car engine. Because it is the most used car. Be careful when buying a car. If you do not always have to stop buying old cars, you will not get a good car. So I think my decision is best decision for buy a car.

Lots of room, very capable off road, very comfortable. Full of safety tech.
The 2020 4runner is amazing. The interior space is massive. The seating position is unlike most trucks and cars it puts you very up high. I have the trd off road package which makes the vehicle extremely capable in all terrain. I believe it's more like old school trucks as its a frame on body construction. The only downsides is I wish it had blind spot notification and a bit more horsepower/torque in the 6 cylinder engine. However the drive train is known to be extremely reliable.

Toyota pays for all oil and maintenance up to 60,000 and after that you can pay a little extra for them to cover up to 100,000 miles. The only issue I have had is my brakes squeaking just a little when it is cold outside and the fact that my model does not have a qi charger. So far it is amazing! Off or on the road. Extremely comfortable for our family of three and our dog! We traveled from Washington to Southern California. Plenty of room and surprisingly comfortable ride. There is plenty of storage space for l of our luggage.

Love my sr5! Best vehicle I have ever owned!
My Toyota 4runner runs great and is super reliable! The interior is very nice and clean looking. It has a lot of room and mine has a 3rd row seat so that is super convenient! It handles very well in the rain/snow. I love having the 4 wheel drive option on my sr5!

If you are looking to upgrade to a larger truck, try out the Toyota 4runner!
Love the Toyota 4runner! Spacious, large trunk, big back seat. Very smooth ride. Sunroof and back window opening is huge plus. I would totally recommend this truck to anyone looking for a large vehicle. Cruise control has option to space out from car in front of you with radar which I find very helpful!

The best SUV for outdoors.
The 4runner is by far the best SUV I have owned. It is a little slow on the pick up on the highway but that is ok! As someone is an active outdoors person I love it. Camping has never been easier, loading hiking gear, biking gear, or getting ready for the snow season I am confident this SUV will get me there!

A tank! Very capable off road.
HVAC system always blows hot air on feet. It makes my feet sweat and it is uncomfortable. The dealer has tried to fix the issue but cannot. Other than that, the vehicle is awesome and the seats are comfortable. The reliability is excellent as one would expect from a Toyota.

Best off-roading family car, most reliable and best resale value.
The resale value is why I choose to drive a 2020 Toyota 4runner trd pro. The interior is also a plus, I went with the extras like the black rack on the roof, black rims and detailing, it also has black leather seating with red stitching, which is a nice touch.

Toyota 4runners growing arm muscles.
Love it, rides smooth, updated electronics. I wish I had the option to start my car before getting in. Also wish the back trunk area was an automatic door, the back hatch is a little heavy. Dual ac would have been a nice option too but was only in limited trim package not trd.

Lots of bells and whistles, love it.
It is not a speed car it is performance, safe and reliable. Had my first 4runner for 11 years and traded it in @ 250,000 miles in almost perfect condition. Got another 4runner and love it. Not great on gas but worth the safety and reliability. Low on maintenance also, never really had any big repairs till hit 250,000 miles and 11 years old then things started to show the age and miles. So worth the price you spend.

Available heated and ventilated front seats help us to keep comfortable.
Integrated suite of driver assistance features including pre collision system with autonomous braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and automatic high beams. When you are on off road legend 4runner turns head on the trail with its unique power rear window.

Roomy enough for all your fun, but lacks air conditioning and special issues.
There are currently no problems with this vehicle I have yet to have issues, it is comfortable. The only thing that makes it less desirable is the amount and availability of air in the back seat I also do not feel that the amount of space allowed for the third row passenger to enter the car is feasible.

4runner is built to last and provides comfort and trustworthiness.
This vehicle is amazing. I bought it to last for the long haul as I have friends who have drive their 4runners for over 200,000 and 300,000 miles, respectively. Front, rear, and cargo areas are spacious and comfortable. The roll down rear window is a cool feature. I love it so far and look forward to many years of great driving on new terrain and into the mountains and making many memories.

I have wanted a 4runner for a very long time so I finally purchased one.
Overall I love it. The 2020 does not have blind spot monitoring which I greatly miss. Would also like Toyota to figure out how to make an automatic lift gate. The lift gate is heavy. Would also like to see a hybrid in the future. The nitrogen filled tires are very nice.
