While some drivers report a power transfer unit (PTU) leak on their Ford Explorers (primarily in model years 2013 and 2014), Ford has never issued a recall on the matter. There is, however, a technical service bulletin for the component. You can find it by searching Ford TSB 13-9-16. The gist of the TSB is that the issue is caused by a PTU vent hose which is missing or disconnected. The repair is a simple one; Ford includes 0.4 hours of labor under warranties for remedy of the issue, but it's likely that by today, You're out of warranty. It's a simple fix even for an inexperienced automotive enthusiast, so if You can find a spare vent hose, it shouldn't take You more than an hour or so to do Yourself.
