The Ford Explorer's timing chain is engineered to last the lifetime of the vehicle, but over time camshaft tensioners, designed to hold the chain taut and in place may stretch, impairing engine timing. Certain models of the Explorer qualify for camshaft tensioner and intake manifold gasket replacement under recall "ProgRam 00M12". This is applicable to 98' models of the Ford Explorer. Signs the tensioners are at risk include engine rattling upon cold start up, metal shavings in the oil and mIS Fires. Owners of any year of the Explorer can MINImize chain wear by scheduling frequent oil changes, using the specified viscosity of engine oil on each visit. They operate from within the truck's engine and require constant lubrication to avoid failure.
Ford Explorers are a piece of junk for at least 14 model years!! My Explorer started rattling at just 113,000mi. Found out not one small shop will even touch this problem and the dealers are backed up for months. We had everything just about perfect on this truck and now I'm told it's a piece of junk. It would cost about 3,500 to 4,000 to fix. Ford should be ashamed of themselves for selling such an inferior product. Should have recall on all models in question! I'll never buy Ford again!!
