There is a Honda CR-V VTC actuator service bulletin. Your engine may rattle loudly for about 2 seconds at startup. The variable valve timing control (VTC) actuator is defective. The service bulletin repair procedure is to replace the VTC actuator. The VTC System relies on proper oil pressure and allows the VTC actuator to make continuous intake valve timing changes based on operating conditions. Intake valve timing is optimized to allow the engine to produce maximum power. Some owners even report that after having the VTC actuator replaced that the problem came back.

Looks like it is related to service bulletin 09-010. It is not a recall, will Honda cover the repair cost?

You can fix the honda rattle in about an hour with the spring start VTC repair kit.

Had my 2014 CRV actuator replaced with the "improved" part.Still rattled the next day. Honda says they'll take another look at it and to bring it in. WHY?Honda obviously couldn't get it right the first time. NO MORE HONDA"S FOR ME! I tell EVERYONE to stay away. I'd sooner trust Hyundai.

My 2013 CRV has 84K miles and the VTC actuator needs to be replaced. Is this a model defect? Seems too soon for this to happen. I drove a Toyota Camry and didn't have any major problems like this.

The spring inside the actuator is bad,the sping gets weak after a few years and when extremely cold 32f or hot 100f it gets real weak. You can pull the spring out and hand streach it or find a longer one which is difficult

In NJ, Started happening at 70k, at 75k now. Two questions: 1. Can I live with this noise for the rest of the car's life? Will it ever breakdown on me? 2. Is there any pending lawsuits in NJ anyone knows about. Best of luck everyone.

2014 CRV. I removed the VTC actuator spring and measured it. It is 30mm long and 5mm dia. I stretched it ~15% to 35mm. No improvement. Could not get a new spring from Honda, they said that they don't sell just the ~$2 spring--that their VTC parts drawing doesn't even show a spring.

Paid $1150 today to fix VTC Actuator on 2013 Honda CRV with a $100 negotiated discount. A friend paid $760 in 2021. We're in Michigan. Any lawsuits pending here?

I have a 2012 Honda CRV with this problem and have found a work around until this gets resolved. Before starting the car, turn the key to accessories and you will see the dash lights all come on. Leave the key in this position until all indicator lights go out and then turn off and back on all the way to start. It seems if you give it this delay the actuator will engage and not grind at start up or rattle after start up. If you live in a cold climate like me (MN), you may need to leave the key turn on to accessories longer. I also noticed if I keep my battery fully charged it seems to reduce the startup grinding also. My 2016 crv has had a battery issue since i bought it and after updating the computer a few times it has got better but still discharges slowly over time, so I just put a charger on it if I notice the starter is not turning fast or seems to have slowed down. This battery discharge issue has never been fully resolved. Another issue is the transmission not shifting between 2nd and 3rd gears slovenly but was also fixed with a computer update and the transmission fluid replaced. Over all this has been a great car with no failures for 80K miles, but with the items listed above i will not buy another one and will probably buy a RAV4.

Just spent over $1,000 to get my 2012 CRV-EXL VTC actuator replaced! Dealer said the replacement offer expired.

I had the VTC Actuator replaced at 14000 miles and 69000 miles on my 2014 CRV. Those 2 were covered under warranty. I had it replaced again at 101000 miles and I had to pay for it. I now have 150000 miles on it and it needs to be replaced again. Honda gave me a quote of $1200 for the actuator AND $1400 for the timing chain. They know the part is defective and causes other problems like the timing chain and oil consumption. They refuse to recall the part or come up with a solution. And they refuse to help cover the cost. There are class action lawsuits against them in a couple of states.

I have had the vtc actuator replaced 3x on my 2014 Honda crv. It is now needing it done a 4x!! Now my car is at 102k and they are trying not to cover it. There is a class action lawsuit in my state of Illinois and California in regards to this faulty vtc actuator. Stay away from Hondas they are now lemons. Not built to last. My first vtc actuator was at 55k then every year since

2010 Honda VTC actuatorsufferes from inadequate design engineering. Root cause is Honda inadequate engineering. But Honda will not stand by their shabby design. Instead their honest customers must bare this burden.

It's lack of oil pressure that causes the momentary metal-on-metal grinding (sound), which is not good. It's a design issue. Replacement will not solve the lack of oil pressure at start up. The new VVT will do the same thing. It's something I will have to live with until it fails, then replacement.

I have a 2014 CRV and got the first actuator replaced in the middle of 2021. I was at the dealer today and it's time for another one, but now the technician is recommending replacing the timing chain too for $2,000..I will only replace the actuator and file an official complaint with American Honda. The more complaints they have the better the chances of this becoming a recall and not just a service bulletin.

I own 2013' have gone through two timing chains, currently 128K on the dash. Dealer said the chain stretched and the tensioner was worn as well. And Now the rattle is back of course on start up and also on initial acceleration. Just ordered this spring kit, we'll see, update to come.

I had VTC n timing chain replaced in 2020. Problem started again in 2022 Honda dealership started logging my oil every 1000 miles. Now they want $180 to diagnose. I paid myself for first repair. This is ridiculous n I won’t buy another honda even after owning them most of my life.
