2020 Honda CR-V Review: Reliable Small SUV With Affordable Ownership Costs As It Ages

Alex Showalter
Mar 28, 2023

The 2020 Honda CR-V lasts around 250,000 miles with some minor battery and oil consumption issues reported. At $23,275 to $33,000, it’s expensive, but worth the money for one of the best compact SUVs available on the market.

likeFilled The Good
There’s plenty of passenger and cargo space throughout the cabin, the engines are efficient and the suspension is smooth.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The touchscreen is tricky to use, the cabin is noisy and the steering is a bit loose.

Is the 2020 Honda CR-V a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 9/10 – 2020 is a great year for the Honda CR-V since they have great reliability ratings paired with the latest safety tech. Owner reviews praise the spacious cabin, low ownership costs, along with the efficient engine.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are great, seating is very comfortable, cargo space is also better than many other small SUVs on the market.
  • Reliability 9/10 – There are no widespread complaints on the 2020 CR-V. Stay away from models from 20152016 which have transmission issues. Models from 20172022 are more dependable long-term.

  • Safety 9/10 – The 2020 CR-V is safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. Standard features include a rearview camera, automatic emergency braking, along with adaptive cruise control. Optional upgrades include blind spot monitoring.
  • Gas Mileage 9/10 – Fuel economy is great at up to 30 MPG, giving 420 miles of range out of the 14 gallon tank. Gas costs are $53 cheaper than average at $169 per month.
  • Value 9/10 – The 2020 Honda CR-V is an expensive compact SUV, although slow depreciation paired with low ownership costs makes it a great value.

Prevents driver from crossing lanes on accident.
Smooth riding, affordable, good for people with short heights. Can tell how much mileage you have left, lets you know when you are crossing lanes. The seats are comfortable, you can fit medium sized furniture with back seats down. Has rear camera to see when you are backing out.

Best SUV ever! Nothing else compares.
My Honda CR-V gets an average of 33 miles to the gallon which is great for an SUV. It is very smooth riding and comfortable. The features work very well. It has a killer look in the sonic blue color. The seat adjusts every way except upside down. Love it!

2020 Honda CR-V review 10/10 car.
The Honda CR-V is very reliable in terms of gas usage, comfort, and overall reliability. Problems with the car are very rare. And for being such a big car and can drive fast and handles very nicely. The 2020 model has many touch screen features which are helpful while driving.

Awesome storage space, and features.
I am obsessed with my Honda CR-V!! It was the first and only car I test drove when I went to hand in my old car! The second I got into the vehicle I knew I needed it to be mine. It was comfortable, easy to handle and has so much space! The backseat has lots of leg room and storage along with the trunk. I am able to keep a stroller, a trunk organizer and still fit any groceries or shopping trips plus extra baby items and my paramedic kit. The radio is awesome and gives you an option for car play which allows you to have your phone plugged in. My car can read me my text messages and even reply!

Comfort and reliability for most.
Have not had any problems as of yet it is really comfortable and is good on gas as well, no complaints. Large enough for travel yet small enough for comfort. All positive reviews as there is nothing to complain about. Bluetooth capabilities, cruise control and great features.

A fun drive, android auto feature works great.
Runs sluggish when you have the 'econ' button on, but saves more gas I guess. But seats are nice and comfy. The android auto feature is finally improved on this model, works perfectly, in previous model years this did not work properly. Car is right sized for my needs, had a pilot previously, was way too big.

Brand new Honda CRV won't start!
I purchased a brand new 2020 Honda CRV in June 2020. After the first 1000 miles the car won't start. It is apparently an electrical program that involves the ignition/battery. I'm bringing it in for service. I don't know if this is an anomaly or if others are having the same problem. Regardless, this is totally unacceptable for any brand new vehicle. My last vehicle was a 2013 Toyota Camry and I never had a problem. I should have gone with a RAV!

Worst car in the world! The 2.4L engine was 100% better! Passing is so hard with 1.5T.

How is this Honda's best selling SUV? Wake up Honda & do the right thing by giving back the 2.4L engine. Get the Rav 4, much better handling and pickup speeds.

Oil dilution
I bought a loaded (Touring) 2017 CRV and really liked it. Then, I noticed the performance of the cvt (lackluster) and about 3-4 months after I bought it (used, local 1-owner) I received a letter informing me said vehicle was the subject of a class-action lawsuit. Upon further investigation, the problem was "oil dilution" - gas would get past the pistons and into the oil pan - when you checked the oil level, it would be high, because of the gas. Also heard maybe 3M recall in China. Checked Consumers' Reports and, for the 2017-2018, the "ratings" columns were blank. Honda would give an extended warranty, and, if you lived in a cold climate, a "fix" (forums said the fix didn't work). So, the oil dilution and cvt scared me off. I was thinking of a 2020 model, but went with the Mazda CX-5 (real transmission) and could not be more pleased. I think Honda is resting on it's laurels and quality control has slipped. Bummer, from a long-time Honda fan.

Battery Issues
Bought a new 2020CRV with 19 miles on the odometer on July 11th. The dealer had to jump the car before we could leave the lot and told us that happens and it will be ok. That should have been a warning to us. Friday July 17th traveled to a golf outing 100 miles from our home. Car worked great on the drive. Saturday the 18th the car wouldn’t start. Called Honda Roadside Assistance and they jumped the battery. That afternoon we took the car to the Honda dealer. They checked it out and said everything was fine. The next day the car would not start again. Had to have it jumped again. 6 hours later, had to call and have it jumped before we could drive home. Next day, same thing. This time had it towed to the dealer. The service rep said it was probably the battery as Honda has terrible batteries. They checked the battery and said it failed so put another a Honda battery in. We have lost all confidence in this car and will start a case at a Honda given the many issues we have now seen online about battery issues. Thank goodness California has a lemon law as we believe it is just a matter of time before we will qualify to be able to return the vehicle.

Trust in a Warranty
I am really disappointed in my 2020 CRV. I had a 2018 with no issues at all.. This car has had to be jumped 5 times since December and I only bought it in August. My car actually sat for service with the flashers on for about 20 minutes before an oil change and they had to jump it at the dealership. This weekend I had it jumped twice and now all the warnings lights are on....ALL of them. I drive 120 miles a day for work so it can't be because it sits idle. In the past my car could sit for at least 6-10 days with no issue. Weather is not a factor as it's in the 60's now. They of course won't do anything until hours of testing.....I have already lost time waiting for roadside assistance. Just very frustrating.

This is my 2nd and last Honda.
I bought new a 2015 CRV, and at 35,000 miles, started having "no start" issues, have bought 3 batteries, then was told by dealership car needed a new starter, car is often dead when I try to start it. Today at 42,000 miles, auto is dead, dealership said bring car in. Thank god for Auto Club. New starters cost $800.00 with only a 12 mo warranty. Will never buy another Honda!

What Do Critics Say About the Honda CR-V?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Honda CR-V is one of the best small SUVs in the world with its roomy cabin and high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the CR-V at 4.1/5, praising the comfortable suspension at highway speeds, but doesn’t like the difficult touchscreen.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the CR-V a 4.1/5, enjoying the standard Honda Sensing features, but owners don’t like the low 1,500-pound towing capacity.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Honda CR-V Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Honda CR-V include dead batteries, excessive oil consumption, along with the automatic braking system engaging too often. Overall, these problems are similar to a lot of other small SUVs, leading to average repair costs as a CR-V ages.

Dead batteries are the most widespread complaint from 2020 CR-V owners in the first 5,000 miles. Usually the problem is caused by excessive electrical draw while the vehicle is off. Diagnosing the source of the electrical draw costs around $100, and fixing it costs $50 to $100, depending on local labor rates.

Excessive oil consumption is another problem mentioned by some 2020 Honda CR-V owners at around 2,500 miles. Usually oil consumption is in the normal ranges. We recommend owners check the oil around every 1,000 miles and top it off as needed. Some engines consume more oil to prevent wear and tear.

The automatic braking system engaging too often also shows up on some CR-V models in the first 1,000 miles. Usually the problem is caused by a dirty front braking sensor. Often simply cleaning the sensor fixes the problem. Some owners have also had the sensor replaced under warranty when the issues show up so early.

There are three recalls on the 2020 Honda CR-V, which is similar to some other small SUVs on the market. The most serious recall covers an improper fuel gauge reading, Honda will replace the fuel tank on affected models for free. Other recalls include the rear frame, which only affects 358 models, and a seat belt buckle, which may not latch. Honda will fix both of those problems for free as well.

How Long Will the 2020 Honda CR-V Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Honda CR-V can last around 250,000 miles, which is only slightly shorter than the long-lasting Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than average according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $387 per year.

As a used 2020 Honda CR-V reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the fuel evaporative canister for $400, timing belt costing $550, along with the vehicle speed sensor which costs $275.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is basic in the entry-level Honda CR-V with a standard 5-inch central display screen. An optional upgrade includes a larger 7-inch touchscreen which adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

Safety technology is excellent for a compact SUV offering standard features including:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane departure warning
  • Rearview camera
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Lane keep assist
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Road departure mitigation

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers

Is the 2020 Honda CR-V a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Honda CR-V is a good value since it offers a lot of features and reliability for the money. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $23,275 to $33,000, making it more than a Kia Niro or Nissan Rogue. When new, the price range was $25,150 to $34,850. Depreciation is better than other SUVs, losing about 3% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Honda CR-V?

There are four models of the 2020 Honda CR-V offered, from the base LX all the way through to the more luxurious Touring. The CR-V comes standard with front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive is available as an optional upgrade.

LX is the entry-level model with:

What Colors Does the Honda CR-V Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Honda CR-V?

The 2020 Honda CR-V is known for its comfortable and spacious interior, making it an excellent choice for both short commutes and long road trips. Its well-cushioned seats provide ample support for occupants, with seating for up to five people.

The cabin is thoughtfully designed, with plenty of headroom and legroom for passengers in both the front and rear rows. The CR-V also features a quiet ride, effectively isolating passengers from road noise and vibrations. How Much Storage Space Does the Honda CR-V Have?

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fifth generation of the Honda CR-V was introduced for the 2017 model year.

2015: CVT transmission introduced, new 7-inch touchscreen, upgraded engine.

2016: New SE model introduced, security system added to the LX model.

2017: Fully redesigned for the fifth generation with new styling, engines, and technology.

2018: Same features as the 2017 model

2019: No major changes.

2020: Standard 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder, additional safety features, minor exterior styling changes.

2021: No changes from earlier years.

How Does the Honda CR-V Compare to the Competition?

The Honda CR-V is among the best compact SUVs for 2020 since it’s more reliable than some of the competition while offering a lot of the latest safety technology across the entire lineup.

The Toyota RV4 is another small SUV available for around $2,000 more. Reliability ratings are slightly higher on the Toyota RAV4, while the Honda CR-V offers a more comfortable interior. We recommend the Toyota RAV4, although both are very good compact SUVs worth test driving.

The Kia Sorento is a competitor available for about $1,500 less. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Kia Sorento, while the Honda CR-V offers better long-term reliability ratings. We recommend the Honda CR-V since it will last longer with fewer anticipated mechanical problems as it ages.

I like the look of it is has a large trunk and a lot of seating space.
I love my vehicle. For an SUV and it is size it is great on gas also drives very easily and I transitioned well from a sedan to this SUV. It has great features like Bluetooth and being able to connect your phone to the cars sound system to play iTunes. Drives well in all weather.

Hybrid model was worth the wait.
I absolutely love my new Honda CR-V hybrid. It has all of the great safety features available, a big upgrade from my previous 2010 model. I purposely waited for the hybrid model to come out this year and I am so happy that I did. From the minute I drove it off the showroom floor I knew it was my car. The interior is extremely comfortable and the exterior is stylish. The drive is very comfortable and the gas mileage beats any SUV I have ever owned. I am very happy with my purchase.

I didn’t think I would, but love the heated steering wheel! And the side mirror heaters, to take the fog off. The cabin is larger than my 2018, which I live and the comfort in all the seats is real. I appreciate the storage space below the back deck for all sorts of things, it is very helpful.

Seats Hard as a Rock
I have a 2013 CRV and love it EXCEPT the seats are HORRIBLE! They are very hard; it's like sitting on a concrete block! I have to use a 6" foam cushion or I'm hurting after 10 min of driving it. From what I've read the seats have gotten thinner and even worse in the newer models!

Amazing Honda CR-V in every way.
It is such a smooth ride with quality finishes. Gas mileage is wonderful. One of the aspects that I like most is that the back seats are very roomy but there is also a nice sized trunk without having a huge vehicle. The sound system is very high quality.

Heated seats, assisted cruise control, lane keep assist.
The car's basic safety features make life easy. Honda's are super reliable as well with service codes displaying right in front of you so you are always up-to-date on maintenance. The heated seats are great too in the winter, tons of tech packing there also, so you have a lot of power at your fingertips.

Honda CR-V is worth every penny!
First, the CR-V is easy to get in and out of. I also love the comfort of heated seats for the winter. Overall it is a comfortable ride. Most importantly, it is reliable. The AWD is a must for living in the Midwest and the brake assistance is great! When you get too close to a vehicle, it will slow down and alert you as well. The computer system is easy to manage. The only thing I am not jazzed about is the factory remote start. It works well but you have to be very close to vehicle for it to work.

Honda CR-V touring 2020 issues.
The main thing I do not like is the armrest, which moves around a lot. And it also came loose. Also, the radio is a little hard to use. There are many buttons to select from and when you turn the car on, it takes time before you can access the buttons.

Love our new Honda hybrid.
Love it! Still learning all of its attributes. Drives like a dream. It has been a big switch going from a large SUV to this hybrid you still sit up like a larger vehicle not like a car. Gas mileage has been a little less than stated but we live in the mountains which changes the dynamics somewhat. In the valley we get the stated mileage.

I have a 2007 Honda CRV with 191,000 miles. No major problems at all. Oil changes and differential oil changed ona routine regular basis with regular maintenance. I’ve never changed any headlamps, or other vehicle lights, which I found unbelievable because all my cars have needed light changes by at least 5 to 7 yrs old. No rust problems and this car has driven in everything! I have always felt safe driving this, handling very very well. Door lock needed to replaced last years- would not stay locked even with the key fod lock. The car was worth every dime I paid for it. 15years this year and still runs smooth and peppy!

My dealership did replace the windshield under warranty but only after I showed him all the complaints and article on the class action. Worried it will happen again...keeping a log on the events.

2020 CRV Touring won’t start 95 miles
Bought 2020 CRV Touring , 95 miles & car won’t start. Just bought a day ago. Hope this is an easy fix. Hard to rate higher.

2020 CR-V better than the rest.
I love it. It's simple and straight to the point. It does well with any situation, on or off road. It gets good gas mileage, if I am driving. If my girlfriend is then it's not the best but still pretty good. I would definitely recommend the vehicle if I was ever asked.

Great smooth ride with good gas mileage.
Very reliable and easy to drive. It is safe and smooth ride. I like all of the new added features it has including lane assist, cruise control, it breaks for you if you get too close, brake hold, and gets great gas mileage. We haven't had any problems with it yet but one thing I do not like is how it turns off when you stop and then turns off when you release your foot off the brake. It sometimes feels jolty when that happens but that is my only complaint with the 2020 Honda CR-V.

New 2020 offers great safety.
This is my 3rd Honda CR-V. It is a great reliable car. My new 2020 seems to have more space and a little bit larger trunk. Love the added safety features. I wish it had GPS system. And a CD player. But it rides well and offers gas saving properties and safety alerts.

The 2020 is a decent car choice.
It is a decent car--totally average. It is got a great amount of trunk space, so if that is what you are looking for, I'd certainly recommend it. It is got an interactive screen which can be troublesome sometimes, it certainly requires some finagling. It is a little slow, and a while to connect via Bluetooth or CarPlay to a device. The newer cr-vs have heated seats, which is a definite plus.

Hybrid is the only way to go!
The armrest moves too much while operating the vehicle, otherwise it is perfect. Great gas mileage, exceptional media controls, and having android auto to guide my ways has made going back to previous vehicles difficult. Very spacious interior, and the hybrid drivetrain makes it silent at speeds below 25 mph.

Love how dependable my Honda is.
My car is awesome very dependable and so gas efficient, it is a great car convertible. Everything is perfect plus the value seems like never goes down thankfully. The color it is perfect and the interior keeps clean very easily. I can only wish for the car to be a little bit more strong although I know it is a four cylinder and that was my choice or maybe I should take my time to go places? Anyways this is a very good car, I deeply recommend it. It does not look inexpensive if you add some good looking wheels like I did. I planning to keep my car for many years and after that ai will buy one more Honda! Just because I can really depend on the good engine.

Why I love my 2020 Honda CR-V.
I love the color red that it comes in. The sears are super comfortable and the leather is easy to clean. The a/c works great and my windows came tinted since I bought it in phoenix, AZ. The cars pick up is not as good as I expected and everyone who has driven it says it has a slow pickup. I was not told the 2020 model has a button for idle engine that frankly caught me off guard because the car feels like it stalls while stopped and in park. But overall I like how it drives once it is on the road in the higher gears. It has many of the modern features like Bluetooth a camera. I do miss having the button to activate the rear camera.

Reliable car. Sleek. Door panel has same material as seats.
It is a very reliable car but I do not like the way it steers. I feel like it's a fight to keep the vehicle straight and it sounds like a weird feeling holding the steering wheel. Other than that everything else is great. The security features are nice and the option to switch to eco driving is a plus.

Brake issues?
I absolutely love my Crv exl. I have a little less than 4500 miles on my 2020. I love the look of it completely. I like the little extras on this model. The negative aspects of my car is that when I wash aNd Dry it, some parts of it feel really flimsy and that doesn't make me feel very secure or happy about the price. Also, I use the brake hold faithfully... Actually one of my fav features.... But if I forget to take my foot off the brake like at a red-light or something, it occasionally will feel aS if it's locking and makes a loud grinding kind of sound then its fine... Doesn't do it all of the time but now... I've noticed when I back out of my driveway, the sound I'm hearing like a.scrubbibg/ grinding sound.... Sounds alot like bad brakes and rotars being damaged....

Spacious and comfortable with excellent added features, well worth the money.
Very reliable, comfortable, and has excellent safety features! Anyone who has been in my car always raves about how comfortable it is, even in the back seat. It also has a ton of storage. The remote start and sunroof are awesome added features as well!

Awesome car awesome sales staff.
This is my first CR-V but not my first Honda. I really wanted something different this year and this SUV really caught my eye. The specs and tech were awesome, the driving safety features were new and up to par, the color was awesome and the ride was great. The price was also really great with a huge discount for returning customer. The sales people never pressured me and were polite. This is why I am a returning customer.

I would definitely buy this car again!
No issues so far. It is very roomy. It had a lot of room for the driver and passenger, with automatic controls to move the seat. Front seats are heated. Rear seats are very spacious and comfortable for long rides for passengers. It had a pull cover for the trunk area. The safety features are great. It has backup camera, blind spot alert and lane detection.

Spacious and safe family car.
The center counsel is very glitchy. This causes a lot of frustration. I love how spacious it feels, the smooth ride and the number of storage spaces. It is a functional vehicle for a family. I feel safe knowing that I have lane departure warnings and changing lane warnings. I have started using the brake hold option, which makes it easier during times of high traffic and in drive thru situations.

Understanding the Apps of CRV Sport
The 2020 CRV comes with walk away auto lock. It comes in the trims Sport up to the best trim. And it apparently works great in the highest trim. I bought a 2020 CRV Sport which has the walk away lock. This trim level does not have all the walk away sensors as the top trim levels. RESULT my CRV Sport was Intruded when I thought it was locked...apparently in this model the walk away auto lock may not engage especially if you leave from the front of the vehicle or walk away to fast. Nowhere in the 400 page booklet does it indicate that and further the sales agent did not point this out. The thieves find this out faster than us, unfortunately I’m one of the victims. Honda fix your fricken walk away auto lock for all trims.

The Honda CR-V more than I ever imagined.
In a year, I have over 40,000 miles on my car! Besides needing tires I have had no problems with my Honda. The car has amazing power and performance, great features, and is super luxurious when compared to the rav. When the salesman showed the back doors opened 90 degrees, I wasn’t impressed and honestly thought “so what.” however for groceries, car seats, and elderly family members it is heaven sent! The trim in the car is luxurious and the driver’s seat is extremely comfortable. I absolutely love it!
accountCircle Kaleigh P on February 2, 2021
I love the room and comfort ability of the vehicle overall.
Very comfortable and roomy. Perfect for a family of two or five! Love the accessibility it offers to expand the trunk room and accommodate if there are car seated children. Easy to handle and good on gas mileage too - I commute 40 minutes one way through a city like area about three times a week and do not have to fill up every week, which is always a plus.
