The Ford Escape's "check engine" light indicates the car's onboard diagnostics has detected an exhaust leak, mIS Fire or timing issue and should be serviced. The warning flashes if the problem is serious or produces a steady glow if the issue is less emergent. It can only be reset using an OBDII scanner to clear the related engine codes. Sometimes disconnecting and re-connecting the positive battery cables can reset the warning if it is not serious. A flashing warning is usually associated with unburned fuel dumped into the exhauSTSystem. This can cause overheating and catalytic converter failure. In other circumstances a faulty spark plug could be causing the light to flash and while this is not considered life-threatening, should be serviced soon. O2 sensor failure can also trigger the "check engine" indicator as well as a dying battery or alternator. Major auto retailers should be able to hook up an OBDII scanner to help diagnose and clear the codes.

Turn ignition to on position without starting the car and at the same time hold the brake and gas down firmly. Hold it for about 30 seconds and you will see it reset on the display in front of you.

Disconnect battery ground from battery and make sure connector cannot touch negative battery post. Connect a jumper wire from the battery positive (with clamp still attached) to the battery negative clamp you removed from the battery and let it sit for 10 minutes. This will drain all the sensors and receivers in the vehicle and reset ALL warning lights and messages. Or use an obdll tool and press reset faults.
