The 2003 Ford e****t ZX2 is generally seen as one of Ford's more reliable models; particularly, the 2000 througH2003 model years are considered some of the best. As such, they don't have quite as many problems as You'd expect, but this doesn't exempt them from all troubles. The most common issue reported is a failing constant control relay module. This typically occurs at higher mileages, which is now more and more likely for a 2003 model year. Over 100,000 miles, the differential spider gears are known to fail. The PCV elbows are notoriously susceptible to damage and failure, and there's a bit of crank walk at higher mileages. The shifter bushings are also known to fail earlier than in most other vehicles. All in all, most of the issues are rather moderate in severity.

Some of the common problems are electrical failure such as control relay module fail, valve seats on cylinder can fall out and cause rough running noise, and distributor shaft o-ring seal may leak oil.
