There are a few problems that can arise with the transmission on a 2011 Toyota 4Runner. The most common problem that will happen is excessive wear on the gears. This usually happens when the fluid levels get low in the vehicle and that leads to the gears grinding against each other. Another common problem is delayed shifting between gears. When the shifting gets rough or delayed that is usually a problem with the transmission control module. When the transmission control module fails it will not shift at the right times and may hunt for gears. Another transmission problem can be with the linkage to the gear selector. If anything comes loose here it will not go from park into gear.

If the 2011 toyota 4runner is having issues with the transmission then you will notice several problems, including shaking or grinding while driving, a burning smell when the vehicle is on, the gears slipping when you shift, the shifter becoming stuck or non responsive, and leaking fluids. This can all lead to a transmission failure which will more or less kill the vehicle.
