The 2003 Ford Explorer comes with a 32mm axle nut size. The axle nut is used to hold the wheel hubs and brake assembly to the axle. When You need to remove the axle nut You should use an impact gun because that will be able to break the torque that is on the nut without having to use a breaker bar. However when You reinstall Your axle nut You should use a calibrated torque wrench. This can prevent the axle nut from stripping out when it is reinstalled. If You happen to notice problems with Your wheel hub then You likely will want to replace it and that is usually the only time that You will need to remove the axle nut.
I entered my vin# for a specific search.Size of axle nut. Got interior and exterior specs. I got 2 different sizes from submitted fourm comments, 32 and 35 mm. What is the size socket that fits?

The 2003 Ford Sport Trac, four wheel drive, front axle nut is a 32 mm. Use care during disassembly as well as assembly,as not to strip out, nor round off the nut and to prevent cross threading. A impact wrench while tearing down is acceptable, but a torque wrench only for re-assembly.
