The EMI light on the MINI Cooper is the engine management light. It's the same as a check engine light on other cars. There is no way to reset the check engine light on the vehicle. It comes on when there is something wrong with the car, but it can be caused by just about anything. Due to this, it is not worth Your time hunting down a random issue unless it is something very obvious that has gone wrong. The best thing to do is take the car to a mechanic and let them scan it with an OBD tool. This will allow them to read the trouble code and tell You where the problem is. Once You know that You can go about getting it fixed, which will turn off the light. One thing to check however is the gas cap and fuel door. If the cap is missing or the door is open then the light will come on. This is a silly thing to go to the mechanic over, so make sure You check it first.

The eml (engine management light) on the mini cooper indicates a problem with the engine which will force the system to decelerate.

The EML light is as others have said, the engine management light. There is also a check engine light. There IS a way to reset the light using an OBD tool, however unless the problem is corrected the light will come back on. An OBD scanner is not very expensive and you can read the codes yourself.

I plugged in a cheap OBD reader which blew the instrument cluster fuse (same fuse for rev counter and speedo). After starting the car a few times & it still not illuminating replaced the fuse and the EML seems to have reset as it lights upon start with all the others but goes off. Perhaps there is a way of resetting the EML but simply pulling out this fuse putting the key in the ignition, pressing start without foot on pedal, taking the key out and reinserting the fuse.
