The 2001 Chevy Silverado holds 16 quarts of coolant, and it uses DexCool when it is filled by Chevrolet or a dealership. Be sure to never mix different types of coolant in Your truck because it can seriously damage the cooling system and cause corrosion on it. If You are unsure what coolant You have it is best to just top it off when it is low with distilled water. You will lose some cooling capacity doing this, but it is better than mixing the different coolants together. I recommend that You inspect Your coolant each time that You change Your oil so that You can make sure that it is properly filled. Low coolant can lead to Your truck overheating and causes permanent damage.

It takes 4 gallons of antifreeze to fill a 5.3 litre Silverado

13.4 quarts without a/c, and 14.9 with a/c. So between 3 and 4 gallons total from empty, with 50/50 mix antifreeze and distilled water.
