The 2001 Toyota Avalon has two knock sensors; one at bank 1, and one at bank 2. You'll find them located in the "V" between the two cylinder banks. You'll need to remove the intake manifold to properly access them. If You think You're having issues, it's wise to first test the wiring; it's possible that You'll save YourseLFA ton of dough by getting away with a replacement harness instead of a replacement sensor. While the repair itself isn't difficult, removing the intake manifold can be time consuming and You run the risk of accidental damage. It's my recommendation that if You're not experienced or confident, You leave the job up to a professional mechanic, even if it ends up costing You a little bit more money.
