Each configuration of the 2005 Ford Explorer comes with the same automatic transmission -- the 5R55S. The recommended automatic transmission fluid for this trans is Mercon V ATF, and You'll need a total fill of 12.7 quarts. However, when You go to change Your transmission fluid at regular intervals, You'll find that You'll only be replacing around a third of the total transmission fluid, as much of it stays in the system during a drain -- therefore, You'll need around a gallon (or perhaps a bit more) for Your regular maintenance. Speaking of regular maintenance, You should change Your transmission fluid at an interval between 30,000 and 50,000 miles, occasionally checking levels in between. This is to help combat against fluid breakdown and low levels, which are the leading causes of '05 Explorer transmission damage.
