The 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt uses SAE 5W-30 oil and Your car will hold about 5 quarts. It is suggested that You change Your oil every 7,500 miles or so. Changing it at the recommended mileage will ensure that Your car has good health for as long as possible. You should check Your levels about once a month. To do so, find the hood release lever in the cabin on the drivers side and pull it to pop the hood. Locate the dipstick in the recessed part of the engine cover and pull it out. Wipe it clean with a shop rag or clean, lint-free towel. Insert it into the oil again, pull it out and see if the level falls below the fill line, or above the full line. If below, You need to add oil, and if above, You need to drain oil. Always check levels on a flat surface with a cool engine.
