2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Review: A Bad Cheap Car With A Short Life Expectancy

Alex Showalter
Feb 10, 2022

A bad year for the Cobalt with power steering and engine problems, shortening the lifespan to 150,000 miles. Due to so many issues it’s cheaper than other compact cars at $2,746 to $6,929.

likeFilled The Good
Performance is great on the higher-end models, the cabin is quiet, and the suspension is firm and sporty.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The passenger room is cramped, there are serious mechanical issues, and the technology is extremely basic.

2006 Chevrolet Cobalt: Quick Overview

  • The 2006 Chevy Cobalt reliability is poor with a lot of power steering and engine problems. Going with a 2007 or newer model is a better choice, the 2006 is a year buyers should avoid.
  • Three 4-cylinder engine choices are available. The entry-level motor has average power for the class, and the one found in the SS has great power for a small car.
  • Average fuel economy for a compact car at 25 MPG.
  • Safety ratings are okay, with 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests.
  • Consumer Reports said the Cobalt is quick but lacks the quality of other compact cars with a lower-than-average owner satisfaction rating.
  • We don’t recommend the 2006 Chevy Cobalt, which ranks 18th out of 22 compact cars, based on owner reviews. Mechanical problems, and low quality parts make it one to avoid.

It is a fun car to drive and I probably will drive it until it dies.
My car is not for sale, thanks I have no problems and everything that has been done to it I have the records, it is comfortable to drive but not to ride as a passenger,

This is a reliable, family friendly, gas saving car
I like my Chevy Cobalt because it is a reliable car. I have owned it for almost four years and it has never let me down. I have had to have a few things repaired at an auto shop, but nothing major.

It is an ideal car with 4 doors and big trunk.
I like the size for one person. It has all the necessary features that I need. I like the idea of knowing how many miles I have traveled on my trip.

2006 Chevy cobalt ltz model review.
The leather is tearing up. The car is sometimes hard to start. The car gets amazing gas mileage. The car has a sunroof. The heated seats work amazingly. The defrost on the front window works slow. It is hard to get up to speed. The car has lots of blind spots making it hard to merge on the freeway or into traffic.

It's great on gas and I think that's a good thing.
My car is white and with four doors. I want to buy a new car

Issa cobalt. Get you a cobalt. Get you a Chevy cobalt.
It's a nice silver car that blows cold air and the heat is hot but it has headlight problems and the seats are very comfortable. It has two doors and is a manual and it goes pretty fast and has been very reliable. There are a few cosmetic issues and problems but it does not take away from how great this car is!
accountCircle Megan H
Even though my vehicle is 12 years old I still get 33 miles per gallon on the highway. City driving which is what I do the most of I am able to still get 29 miles per gallon.
I love the color of my vehicle and I love the fantastic gas mileage that I get. Also, where I live they are fairly common so it is easy to find and get parts for it.
accountCircle Cathy H
Easygoing vehicle - easy maintenance.
With proper maintenance this is an extremely car. The items that required repair were all manufacturer recalls, which I followed through on. The headlights did allow water to leak in. I had to replace them. My car is 12 years old, and is my best friend. I can go anywhere I want to go.

It looks really great and I love the paint job!
The engine is running badly. The lifters are going out and it shuts off at stop signs and stop lights. It makes me sad.

Cobalt, cheap with a price.
2 doors, breaks down often. I have had to get the car fixed 3 times in 2 years, missing out on work and school. I am often worried it will break again.

There's nothing to highlight.
Chevy gas lines are very expensive. The car was made to low to the road. The car is very compact. I have had so many problems with this car. The parts are expensive and it just your typical car not something that great. I will never buy this car again n I do not recommend it.

It has a lot of issues. You will have lot of repairs and bills will add up.
Iv had way to many problems out of it. When I can I am gonna sell it. I thought it would be a good car but I can't depend on it.

It's small and if you are six feet or older don't buy this car.
It's a small compact vehicle with 2 doors and is too small for me. The steering is really bad. The breaks don't work. It's not good.

Too many recalls that not fix after multiple trips to dealerships to fix same recalls.
Recalls after recalls and poor customer service. When looking to buy a car you want the most safest and reliable vehicle. Especially great service. However service Chevrolet did not provide that. I will never purchase another car there ever again.

What Problems Does the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Have?

There are more complaints with the Chevy Cobalt than other compact cars from 2006. The 2007 model has half the number of owner complaints, making the extra $500 worth the cost to upgrade.

Keys getting stuck in the ignition is one of the most common complaints, happening around 60,000 miles. Under the steering column there is a button which will release the keys. There are several ignition switch recalls, and in some cases Chevy may replace the ignition for free. If the problem is not covered by the recall, then replacing the key cylinder costs about $320.

Power steering problems are failing frequently around 77,000 miles. The power steering system is known to turn off while driving, making steering much harder. There is a recall on the electronic system, but if your issue is not covered by the recall then a replacement is about $400.

Engine stalling and shutting off is another common problem, occurring around 80,000 miles. Some owners have been able to solve the problem by cleaning the throttle body and injectors for $70.

There are 6 recalls, which is an average number for older cars. The recalls include the headliner trim, fuel pump module, electronic power steering, and ignition switch. The most serious recall is for power steering, since failures increase the risk of an accident.

How Much is the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Worth?

accountCircle Caroline D

Yes, it has been a very reliable vehicle. I cannot describe any significant problem with this vehicle that I have personally incurred. The car is well built, I believe.

accountCircle C O

Yes, the Chevrolet cobalt has been reliable for me. I have had electrical problems. Other than that, I haven't had any problems.

accountCircle Briley F

Very reliable, I've only had to change the battery once, like I said very minor problems. The speakers the locks but everything else works pretty well.

accountCircle Sarah O

The only problems I have had with my car are ones caused by the previous owner. I have had to replace the fuel line because mine rusted out. I have also had to replace the passenger door due to a deer hitting me. Other than that I have had no issues.

accountCircle Daniel T

I haven't have anything that is abnormal. I did have to replace battery, starter and alternator but that is normal things that do eventually do go bad on a vehicle.

accountCircle John y

The fuel sensor is out but that's it. It's a small car so it doesn't have a lot of space and no audio jack for an aux cord.

accountCircle Andrea G

It is reliable, but it has issues with the electric power steering and has to be replaced. Also the interior door is not very strong and it has started to come apart from the mainframe.

accountCircle Lynn W

Yes very reliable. Owned mine for 7 years come 2020. My worst headache was a vvt exhaust solenoid on top of the motor change it out just like a spark plug if your car makes a heck of a popping noise at rear of car taking off from lights or getting up to speed. People kept telling me it was it the motor but I knew it ran too good to be the actor's around the timing chain.

What Technology & Safety Features Are Included?

Technology is similar to other compact cars from 2006 in the Chevy Cobalt, but is very outdated by modern standards.

  • Base technology includes an AM/FM/CD stereo system with 4 speakers.
  • Optional upgrades include a 7-speaker Pioneer premium stereo system.
  • Standard safety features include air bags. Optional upgrades include anti-lock brakes, and OnStar communications.

What Color Options are Available?

How Big is the Cobalt?

Similar in size to other compact cars including the Civic and Elantra, the 2006 Cobalt is available as a coupe or sedan. The seats are uncomfortable, and there’s limited legroom in the back seats. Cargo space is good, with 13.9 cubic feet of room in the trunk, fitting 3 to 4 suitcases.

How Does the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Compare to Other Cars?

Ranking 18th out of 22 compact cars from 2006 based on owner reviews, the Chevrolet Cobalt is near the bottom of the class.

One of the highest-rated compact cars from 2006 is the more expensive Toyota Corolla. The Corolla has much higher long term reliability ratings, but the Cobalt has better performance. Overall, the Corolla is a better choice, though on the used market since they last longer.

Another rival is the Honda Civic, which is also more costly. The Civic has lower ownership costs, on the other hand, the Cobalt has less controversial styling. The Civic is a better compact car though, and will outlast a Cobalt.

Overall yes especially for driving in tight areas for parking, it gets good gas mileage it's got great handling and drives quick when I need too.

Reliable so far
Mind you i have a 4dr manual LS. Very basic base model.105k right now, no check engine light, i’ve driven it all over the state (FL). Maybe it had issues before i bought it but i’ve never had any issues yet. Gonna sell or trade before it has a crazy amount of miles though as stick in a major city is pretty rough and i miss my volkswagens

Cobalt on snow tires is fanTASTIC in the snow, never had an issue, I got it out of a 2 ft snow drift after a bad storm at work, cobalt's are great in the snow (+100pts for manual), just go get some snow tires and you'll be doing just fine.

This car is very nice and has a roomy trunk.
I love how big the trunk space is. I do wish the back seat was just a little more roomy. I like that I only have to push 1 button to find out different things such as trip miles and how many miles are left in gas. I like how smooth out drives as well. I also love that it has child locks for the doors and windows.

My vehicle is a beautiful fall October color orange!
When I first bought my car it felt nice to ride in now it doesn't, probably due to potholes where I live. I do like the fall October color orange. I do like that it's 2 door, but at times wish it was a 4 door. Close to my car being at 100,000 miles my check engine light came and won't go off. The front wheel bearings I've had to replace twice so far since I've owned it. Knock on wood keeps on moving along. I may sell my vehicle when I get another vehicle or may keep my vehicle for back up. When I got my vehicle it had a spare tire in the trunk.
accountCircle James B on March 21, 2021
It's not a bad car but it does have some problems It's safe to drive though the problems don't really affect driving it too much
It was a Florida car and I live in New York, so for the first bit of time having it the underside was in great condition. This past winter I had multiple problems with the car, but thankfully most of those are resolved or will be resolved before the coming winter. My tire came off once while driving to work. It sucked.
accountCircle Mary M on March 20, 2021
Don't buy a Cobalt if you live in the snowbelt.
I've had ongoing engine problems, a check engine light that stays on even after repairs. A rattle in the back end from from day one. After the recall repairs were done on the ignition, the key will randomly not turn to the on position and having it towed to the dealership releases it so it never does it for them. The car has been relatively reliable in dry, warm weather. It is not well suited for wet pavement with the stock tires nor is it well suited for snow deeper than around 4 inches as it becomes high centered in deeper snow. If I had it to do over I would not buy this car again as my primary source of transportation, it is fine for a 2nd casual form of transportation.
accountCircle Leah W on March 10, 2021
It's a two-door vehicle so getting in and out of it is not always easy. The back seat is cramped.
My car has good gas mileage and has been a reliable set of wheels for as long as I have had it. I wish it was a little bit bigger but I like it for the most part. It is a very dependable car.

Have never had any issues with it. Change oil about every 5000 miles the only thing I have needed to do is get a new battery and new tires. It is a 5 speed which I love. Gas mileage is great four door sedan good value for the money plenty of trunk space.
accountCircle Dustin W on March 4, 2021
It needs regular maintenance just like any other vehicle, but it does like to use oil so checking it regularly is a must.
I purchased my vehicle when I was in high school and I still drive it daily today. The only complaint I have is that the rocker panels are starting to rust out. My vehicle gets great gas mileage and still runs very smoothly with 150k miles on it.
accountCircle Jessica C on March 2, 2021
If your considering buying a 2006 Cobalt... Don't!!
My experience with my Cobalt has not been a good one! I got it used with a little over 100,000 miles. In the past two years the muffler has fallen off twice, I've had to replace the ignition key twice because it stopped recognizing my key. Then had to replace the ignition switch, which caused the wiring harness to fry so now it has been sitting in my driveway not being driven. I've had so many issues with this car I do NOT recommend. Oh and let's not even talk about the rust issues.

Review of Chevrolet Cobalt
For being a 2006 model, it still runs good. I haven't had too much problems with it. I did have to change the fuel pump about a year ago. Gas mileage is not the best. Seems like it maybe because it is older. It is reliable car & I use it to work & back without any problems.

My Chevrolet cobalt never died.
It is comfy and compact for short people but not good for taller people. The air conditioning is awful when it is over 85 degrees outside but the heat and heated seats are fantastic. The back seat and trunk is huge and stores a lot. I have never had an issue with my car. We always do regular oil changes and tire rotations.

It has not aged well, to run and own a Cobalt is a lot of money to upkeep.
The Cobalt has not stood the test of time. Despite taking care of the car, it is starting to get run down. Years ago the key fob stopped working, the doors will not lock without the alarm going off, the air conditioning stopped working. I've replaced many parts of the car but it still runs.

For it is age, my car is great. It is needed a few replacement parts since I bought it in 2015 (used), but nothing too crazy. The gas mileage is great, and it is super spacious. I am able to haul multiple bags of trash for my family, as well as helping transition props for the community theatre I help with, such as small tables and chairs. The seats are easy to move and fold, and the trunk is easy to load things in to as well.

This is the most reliable car I've had EVER
This car has really lasted me a while. It is a great, easy to drive, basic car. It does not use a lot of gas. This car is very reliable. The only cons are the features that it does not have. First, the windows are manual. Although manual windows are better in some circumstances (won't ever get stuck is car battery is dead), I prefer the automatic windows because it takes longer to roll them up. My car was bought used, so the sound was alright even though I could still notice that the front speakers don't work. This car is pretty spacious. I like how you can fold the back seats down to access the trunk. This car does not have any armrests but you get used to it. This car does not overheat, the AC is GREAT. The heater is also great in the colder months. I haven't had any major issues with my car other than the couple of manufacturers recalls. Every time I get my car serviced for a recall, I get great customer service and have never had to go back for anything. Another thing I like about my Chevy Cobalt is the stats on the dashboard. It lets me know the temperature outside, how much miles I have, how many miles till I run out of gas, and also oil percentage so I never run out. This is the best car I have had and will continue to have.

It is red and I really enjoy how smooth the ride is.
I do not have many problems with my car, it is great on gas. The air conditioner does go out a lot. It is a used car.

That it rattles really bad when braking on rough roads. If you are driving make sure to slow down really early to prevent the car from falling apart
I like that it gets me from place to place but it rattles really bad and seems like it is falling apart without many miles. Plus there were multiple recalls and seems like poor engineering.

A hybrid is wonderful for someone who has a long commute.
It is a good looking car that is comfortable and easy to drive. Reliable too for the most part. I have had it since 2007 and have not had to do too many repairs but it has too many recalls.
