The 2012 Chevrolet Impala actually comes with one of two different 3.6L engines, and Your permissible oil type somewhat depends on the style that You have. Both require 6.0 quarts, and recommend SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil, but the LFX FlexFuel engine model may run a bit better with SAE 0W-30 full synthetic, especially in frigid temperatures. Over the short term, You can substitute SAE 5W-40 full synthetic oil instead, but this isn't recommended if You can avoid it. That's because using oil with a higher viscosity introduces friction to the engine, which causes premature wear and tear over time. Eventually, this can lead to an early engine failure. Therefore, stick with the manufacturer's oil with the lowest weight, even if it costs You a bit more per oil change.

With an engine with over 100,000 miles, I'd think a10W40W or 20W50W would protect it better?
