From 2006 until 2010, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid came fitted with a timing belt. The following year, Toyota swapped this out for a timing chain, which gains significant in terms of longevity. But while timing chains should last the lifetime of the vehicle (fingers crossed), a timing belt needs to be replaced at regular intervals. Unfortunately, each time, this will cost You. Toyota recommends swapping this every 90,000 miles. You can expect to pay between $450 and $800 for the replacement, depending on the mechanic's labor rate and a small number of other factors. You really can't put a price on Your safety, though; You'll want to stay on top of timing belt replacements, because their catastrophic failure at highway speeds can put Your life at serious risk. It's a likelihood if You roll the dice by driving on a worn one.
