If you notice the "coolant over temperature" warning on your Ford Explorer, one of two things is possible. Either there's an issue with the coolant itself (as in, it's over the appropriate temperature!) or you've got a problem with your coolant temperature sensor. You should check if the engine is radiating an excessive amount of heat (but never open the coolant reservoir when hot). First, check to see if you have any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) with an OBD-II scan tool. The most common DTC with this warning is P1289, which indicates the temperature sensor has failed. If not, it's possible that you are low on coolant, or have an obstruction in the system. Ensure that antifreeze levels are sufficient, and continue your diagnosis from there.

If your coolant over temperature light came on replace the thermostat, and make sure that you have the correct mixture of coolant.
