To reset the liftgate on a Ford Explorer You should try putting Your key in the rear lock and turning it on to the unlock position. It's possible the latch had moved and this is what is causing the issue. If You still are struggling with the liftgate it may be an issue of a blown fuse if You have a model with a power liftgate. If the fuse is blown the power liftgate will not be able to work as it should. A liftgate that is non-power but struggling to open and shut will need to be oiled as it will help the gears move easier.

Insert the ford's key into the lift gate keyhole and turn it to the right to unlock the door's lock mechanism.
