A Ford Explorer uses Motorcraft Mercon lv automatic transmission fluid for power steering. To change the power steering fluid You will need to first locate the container, which will be under the hood near the window. It will be a clear plastic container. Using a pump You will want to extract all of the fluid from the container. Once the fluid gets low You will want to turn the steering wheel, all the way to one side, then all the way to the other. This will cause the fluid in the wheel to drain into the container, remove this as well. Once the container is dry You can go ahead and fill it to the full line, but not over. It will take a little bit for the wheel to loosen up, so try driving for about 20 minutes to make sure it worked.

Totally depends on the year. My 2012 has an electric power steering system ("EPS" or "EPAS"). These systems use an electric motor instead of a hydraulic system and therefore do not have any power steering fluid to leak. Electric power steering typically require less maintenance and are more fuel efficient.
