If You're having an issue with a ticking sound coming from Your Ford Explorer's engine, check out technical service bulletin (TSB) 11-8-26, which addresses a cold start up ticking noise on the 2011 model year. If this doesn't seem to align with Your issue (or year), then it's possible that You've got low oil, a bad fuel injector, or perfectly normal operation. In the case of the latter, You may want to get a professional's opinion once he or she hears what it sounds like -- but the Explorer's direct injection can cause some level of ticking. In the case of some of the former, You'll get lifter noise from low engine oil, and failing fuel injectors often give off a loud Audible click. Hopefully these are some good places to start Your diagnosis.

If you have a ticking sound coming from your engine, you may have low oil, issues with a fuel injector, or direct injection problems.
