The 2002 Ford Explorer uses 11 quarts of transmission to completely fill it when it is changed. Ford recommends that You use a Mercon V transmission fluid whenever You need to change the oil in it. I recommend that You check Your transmission fluid every time that You change Your oil. You will want to make sure that it is full and free from any signs of debris. Usually debris in transmission fluid will make it sparkle or look reflective because it has metal shavings inside it. If You notice any leaks from Your transmission You should address them as well because You do not want to have decreased lubrication and protection on Your transmission.
