The MINI Cooper uses regular unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher. You will never want to use diesel or E85 in Your vehicle because it can destroy the motor or the fuel system. I recommend always getting the highest octane rating that You can afFord. The higher the octane the cleaner the burn in the engine. That means that there will be less carbon buildup when You are driving. There are also fuels on the market that are listed as top tier and these have detergents in them that can help breakdown engine sludge and help Your motor last longer. In general it is worth it to get better gasoline since it can help Your car last longer.

What kind of gas does a mini Cooper 2008 BMW motor require
Although they strongly suggest 91 octane for all minis, they do allow the use of 89 octane in the "s" and the jcw, and 87 octane in the mini standard, acknowledging that some spark knock will occur which they claim will not harm the engine.

MINI recommends 91 or better octane. While it will run on 87 or 89, there may be engine knock. Gas mileage is better with the higher octane as the timing is set for it. Lower octane will cause ignition to occur too early in the compression cycle; hence the knock.
Octane required is a function of engine compression. It isn't a matter of using the highest octane to make your engine perform better or burn cleaner. If you put high octane gas in an engine designed for lower octane gas it will not perform well.
