The best oil to use in the 2001 Subaru Forester is SAE 5W-30 with an API oil gradE-Classification of SJ or SH, SG can be used if the other two are unavailable. An oil with a viscosity rating of 5W-30 will provide better fuel economy but Subaru says a higher viscosity oil can be used when the temperatures get hotter to better protect the engine. They recommend 10W-30, 40 or 50 and 20W-40 or 50 in areas with very high temperatures, such as in the dessert, as long as they have the same oil gradE-Classification. You should check the engine oil level often, once per week or every time You put gas in the tank. Proper engine oil levels are important for proper engine performance and routine oil changes will ensure a long life.

The 2001 Subaru Forester recommended oil grade is ILSAC GF-4, which can be identified with the ILSAC certification mark (Starburst mark) or API classification SM with the words "ENERGY CONSERVING". The recommended SAE viscosity is 5W-30.
